Retailers, commercial facilities, manufacturing plants and virtually all large, open industrial facilities face unique environmental control challenges. During cold winter months, their inhabitants often shiver at floor level while heated air rises into the rafters. However, scorching summer days can lead to a lot of uncomfortably hot and sticky patrons. These types of facilities also face air quality issues, and – because of their sheer size – potential difficulties with zone-specific management.

While HVAC and building management systems (BMS) can address these problems to some extent, facilities managers now have another weapon in their arsenal: networked systems of high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) ceiling fans.

What is an industrial high volume, low speed (HVLS) fan? While the purpose of a HVLS fan is similar to that of a traditional ceiling fan, HVLS fans feature blade diameters up to twenty four feet. One fan can cover 22,000 square feet and move air up to 85’ in all directions from the center of the fan. HVLS fans slowly circulate a large amount of air in a very large space. It is the shape, not the number of blades that generates the large volume of air movement needed for an effective HVLS fan. Maximum air volume is delivered when there is a consistent amount of air movement across the entire diameter of the fan.

In warmer months, the increased air movement caused HVLS fans reduces effective temperatures and can make the air feel up to 7°F (4°C) cooler. In cooler months, HVLS fans gently distribute the warm air trapped at the ceiling towards the floor where it is needed. This mixing effect, known as destratification, creates a much more uniform air temperature from floor to ceiling which lowers the burden on your heating system. HVLS fans help to significantly improve everyone’s comfort and health while also helping to reduce energy consumption and combat air quality issues. They can also integrate with fire prevention systems.
