Industrial HVLS Ceiling Fans Course

Industrial facilities, retailers, commercial facilities, manufacturing plants and virtually all large, open spaces face unique environmental control challenges. During cold winter months, occupants often shiver at floor level while the heated air rises into the rafters and scorching summer days can lead to uncomfortably hot patrons. These types of facilities also face air quality issues, and because of their sheer size, potential difficulties with zone-specific management.

While HVAC and building management systems (BMS) can address these problems to some extent, facilities managers have another weapon in their arsenal: a networked system of high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) ceiling fans.

What is an HVLS fan? While the purpose of a HVLS fan is similar to that of a traditional ceiling fan, HVLS fans feature blade diameters up to twenty four feet. Just one of these massive fans can move air in a 31,000 square feet area and up to 100’ in all directions from the center of the fan. HVLS fans slowly circulates large volumes of air for very large spaces. It is the shape, not the number of blades that generates the large volume of air movement needed for an effective HVLS fan. Maximum air volume is delivered when there is a consistent amount of air movement across the entire diameter of the fan.

In warmer months, the increased air movement caused by HVLS fans helps reduce effective temperatures and can make the air feel up to 7°F (4°C) cooler. In cooler months, HVLS fans gently distribute the warm air trapped at the ceiling down towards the floor where it is needed and appreciated by occupants. This mixing effect, known as destratification, creates a much more uniform air temperature from floor to ceiling which helps lower the burden on your HVAC system. HVLS fans help to significantly improve everyone’s comfort and health while also helping to reduce energy consumption and combat air quality issues. HVLS fan systems can also integrate with fire prevention systems.
